Widmer Drifter Pale Ale

Newly out in bottles this month in 20 states. I had my first sample today, just now in fact!

Bottle sent UPS from Widmer
Served in a pint glass
Temp around 50+

Popped the top and was met by citrus aroma, so strong, the children came over to smell it and commented on tangerine, grapefruit, orange soda aroma. Reddish to good amber in color. Off-white head diminished quite quickly but that grapefruit aroma lingered long after the head was gone. The press release stated that the beer has "undertones of tangerine, mandarin, orange and grapefruit" - I checked it because I wasn't sure it was supposed to be that strong and was wondering if it was one bottle or me!

I don't think there were undertones - it was like raising your glass to your lips and expecting to get grapefruit juice. Now, I happen to LOVE grapefruit in any fashion so this is ok by me but for the style I thought it was a little over the top. The hops and malt were well-balanced for the style, I thought. It's really drinkable and goes down easy and as I'm nearing the end of this pint...I must say, I think I'd like another and drift away with the Drifter. A definite session beer and good translation into summer. Perfect for that spring camping trip I have planned. Prost!

P.S. Check out www.widmer.com for more info and see if it will be sold in your neck of the woods!
